The upcoming 2024 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is poised to usher in a new era of cricketing excitement, featuring more teams and an innovative format that promises fresh match-ups and historic moments. With the recent conclusion of the Africa Qualifier, the final list of 20 teams set to participate in this groundbreaking tournament has been confirmed. Namibia and Uganda clinched the last two spots, adding their names to the elite group of teams that secured qualification through regional contests.
A Tournament of Firsts: USA and West Indies Hosts
The 2024 T20 World Cup is set to be a landmark event, breaking new ground as the USA qualifies as hosts alongside the West Indies. For the USA, this marks their first appearance in a global tournament since the Champions Trophy in 2005, adding a layer of historic significance to their participation.
Revamped Format: Super Eights and Knockout Stages
The 20-team tournament will feature a revamped format, departing from the familiar First Round/Super 12 structure seen in the previous editions. Instead, the competition will unfold in two phases before reaching the knockout stages. The initial group stage will consist of four groups of five teams each, with the top two from each group progressing to the Super Eights phase.
In the Super Eights, the remaining teams will be divided into two groups of four. The top two teams from each Super Eights group will then advance to the highly anticipated semi-finals, setting the stage for thrilling encounters and high-stakes cricket.
Qualification Pathways: Rankings and Performances
The pathway to qualification for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 varied for teams. As hosts, the West Indies and the USA secured the first two spots. The following 10 spots were determined by performances at the 2022 edition and rankings before the November 14 ICC T20I rankings cut-off.
Australia, as the top eight teams (top four in each Super 12 group) from the 2022 edition, earned direct qualification. Afghanistan and Bangladesh secured their spots as the next-best teams on the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings as of November 14, 2022.

With the stage set for an expanded and reimagined T20 World Cup, cricket enthusiasts around the globe eagerly anticipate the unfolding of historic moments and unexpected match-ups.
