3rd Culture Working Group Meeting Concludes Under India’s G20 Presidency in Hampi, Karnataka.

The discussions at the Third Culture Working Group meeting, held under India’s G20 Presidency, concluded on July 11, 2023, in Hampi, Karnataka. This meeting aimed to promote cultural development and foster consensus on the recommendations put forth in the previous CWG meetings held in Khajuraho and Bhubaneswar.

Objectives of the Third Culture Working Group Meeting: Under India’s G20 presidency, the Culture Working Group (CWG) endeavors to place culture at the heart of policymaking. The third CWG meeting aimed to achieve a consensus on the recommendations discussed in the previous meetings and prepare for the G20 Culture Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for August 26, 2023, in Varanasi.

Cultural Immersion Activities and Heritage Site Visits: As part of the cultural immersion experience, the G20 delegates engaged in various activities to appreciate the rich heritage of Hampi. A tree plantation activity took place at the historic Queens’ Bath, and a guided tour of the Royal Enclosure provided insight into the architectural marvels of the region.

Captivating Cultural Performance at Yeduru Basavanna Complex: At the Yeduru Basavanna complex, delegates were treated to a captivating cultural performance choreographed by Smt Kausalya Reddy. Troupes of Gurus Radha and Raja Reddy showcased four distinct dance styles from South India, including Bharatanatyam from Tamil Nadu, Mohiniyattam from Kerala, Kuchipudi from Andhra Pradesh, and Odissi from Odisha. The mesmerizing performance against the backdrop of historical monuments left the delegates spellbound.

Inaugural Session and Address by Shri Pralhad Joshi: The third G20 Culture Working Group meeting commenced on July 10, 2023, with an inaugural session in Hampi. Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs & Coal and Mines, addressed the participants, emphasizing the progress made in identifying the four priority areas and seeking consensus on action-oriented recommendations to place culture at the heart of policymaking.

Excursion to Hampi’s Heritage Sites and River Ride: Delegates were taken on an excursion to Hampi’s renowned heritage sites, including the Vijaya Vittala Temple, the Royal Enclosure, and the Yeduru Basavanna complex. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offered a glimpse into the grandeur of the Vijayanagar Empire. Additionally, delegates enjoyed a coracle ride on the Tungabhadra River, immersing themselves in the natural beauty surrounding Hampi.

Musical Delight: Percussion Recital by Vikku Vinayakram: Renowned musician Vikku Vinayakram treated the G20 delegates to a mesmerizing percussion recital. Vinayakram, known for incorporating the ghatam into classical music traditions, has taken this unique instrument to the world stage through fusion music collaborations with international musicians.

Integration of Bharatnatyam and Ruins at Vijaya Vithala Temple Complex: During a 30-minute interactive presentation, Bharatnatyam dancers showcased their skills against the backdrop of the ruins of the Vijaya Vithala Temple complex. This integration of dance and historical architecture brought alive the glory of the Vijayanagar Empire, leaving a lasting impression on the delegates.
