The Group of Twenty (G20) is an intergovernmental forum that includes 19 countries and the European Union (EU). Major global economic issues such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development can be addressed by this.
The G20 is made up of most of the world’s largest economies, including both industrialized and developing nations; it is responsible for around 80% of gross world product (GWP), 59–77% of international trade, two-thirds of the global population, and 60% of the world’s land area.
In 1999, the G20 was founded in response to several world economic crises. It has convened at least once a year since 2008, with summits involving each member’s head of government or state, finance minister, foreign minister, and other high-ranking officials; the European Union(EU) is represented by the European Commission and the European Central Bank.
Other countries, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations are invited to attend the summits by the host country, some on a permanent basis.
The 2009 G20 summit declared itself the primary venue for international economic and financial cooperation. Although it is criticized for its limited membership, lack of enforcement powers, and for the alleged undermining of existing international institutions, the group’s stature has risen during the subsequent decade, and it is recognized by analysts as exercising considerable global impact.
