Giani Zail Singh on Birth Anniversary: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu commemorates the birth anniversary of former President Giani Zail Singh, acknowledging his enduring influence and statesmanship. Born Jarnail Singh on May 5th, 1916, in Sandhwan, Singh’s journey from a granthi to a prominent political figure is marked by dedication and resilience. His activism in peasant agitations and pursuit of representative governance in Faridkot reflect his early commitment to social justice and democracy.
Giani Zail Singh’s tenure as Punjab Chief Minister saw landmark initiatives such as the establishment of India’s first semiconductor manufacturing unit and the Punjab Land Reforms Act of 1972. His efforts to champion Sikh religious causes and ensure social equity, including reservations for Mazhabi Sikhs and Valmikis, underscore his commitment to inclusive governance.
Elected as India’s home minister and later as president, Singh’s presidency navigated tumultuous times, marked by Operation Blue Star and the anti-Sikh riots of 1984. Despite challenges, Singh upheld the principles of democracy and accountability, earning respect for his steadfastness and integrity.
His legacy continues to inspire generations, with his memoirs published posthumously in 1997. As Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu pays tribute to Giani Zail Singh, the nation reflects on the enduring values of leadership and service embodied by the former president, ensuring his legacy lives on in the annals of Indian history.
