An Indian former professional footballer who played as a striker, Bhaichung Bhutia (born 15 December 1976) is also spelled as Baichung Bhutia. Bhutia is the torchbearer of Indian football in the international arena.

He is often nicknamed “the Sikkimese Sniper” because of his shooting skills in football. “God’s gift to Indian football,” is how three-time Indian Player of the Year I. M. Vijayan described Bhutia. Bhutia has had four spells at the I-League side East Bengal Club, where he started his career.

In 1999, he joined the English club Bury, becoming the first Indian footballer to sign a contract with a European club and only the second to play professionally in Europe, after Mohammed Salim.

Baichung Bhutia had a short loan spell at the Malaysian football club Perak FA afterward. He has won the Nehru Cup, the LG Cup, the SAFF Championship, and the AFC Challenge Cup three times.

He has 80 international caps, which is the second most for any player in India. At the age of 18 years and 90 days, he became India’s second youngest international goal scorer after Jerry Zirsanga when he scored his first goal against Uzbekistan in the 1995 Nehru Cup.

Early life:-

Bhaichung Bhutia was born into an agricultural family. Bhutia’s parents, both farmers in Sikkim, were not originally keen on his interest in sports. After the encouragement of his uncle, Karma Bhutia, he started his education at St. Xaviers School, Pakyong, East Sikkim, even though his father had died in his childhood.

He won a football scholarship from SAI to attend the Tashi Namgyal Academy in Gangtok at the age of nine. After playing for several schools and local clubs in his home state of Sikkim, he went on to play for the Gangtok-based Boys Club, which was managed by Karma.

He won the “Best Player” award at the 1992 Subroto Cup, which brought him to the notice of the football establishment. Bhaskar Ganguly, a former India goalkeeper, spotted his talent and helped him make the transition to Calcutta football. Bhutia not only represented his school in football, but also in badminton, basketball, and athletics.

Bhutia was born on December 15, 1976, in Sikkim. His parents were farmers. He has two older brothers and one elder sister. Bhutia married Madhuri Tipnis, a hotelier, in 2004. They successfully filed for divorce in 2015 in Bandra court. He has 3 children, 2 girls, and 1 boy.
