The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body under the Government of India, has announced internship opportunities for 500 students from its partner institutions. This significant initiative aims to enhance student engagement in the field of standardisation and quality assurance, reinforcing India’s commitment to building a robust quality ecosystem.
The announcement was made during the Annual Convention of BIS Standardisation Chairs and Nodal Faculty of MoU Partner Institutions, held recently with participation from 58 institutions across the country.
Internship Details: Building Expertise in Standardisation and Quality Control
The BIS internships are open to students pursuing:
- 4-year undergraduate degree courses
- 5-year integrated degree courses
- Postgraduate degree programmes
- Diploma programmes
Each internship will span 8 weeks and include:
- Pre-standardisation work in key industrial sectors
- QCO (Quality Control Order) compliance surveys conducted in collaboration with BIS offices
- Site visits to large-scale industries, MSMEs, and accredited laboratories
- In-depth research on manufacturing processes, raw materials, testing protocols, and conformity assessments
This practical exposure is designed to give students real-world insights into product quality, regulatory standards, and compliance mechanisms.
Strengthening the BIS-Academia Interface: Key Achievements
The BIS has been actively collaborating with academic institutions under its MoU program to embed standardisation in educational systems. Notable milestones from this ongoing partnership include:
- Standardisation modules integrated into the curriculum of 15 institutes
- Over 130 R&D projects commissioned in partnership with academia
- More than 50 BIS Corners and Academic Dashboards established on campuses
- Formation of 198 Standards Clubs across 52 institutes
- Participation of over 3,400 students from 74 institutes in national-level BIS quizzes
- 500 student internships planned for the 2025–26 academic year
These initiatives are aimed at creating a future-ready workforce that is well-versed in national and international quality standards.

In his inaugural address, Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of BIS, emphasized the importance of the BIS-academia partnership, calling it a “shared national mission” to instill a culture of quality and standardisation across India’s higher education landscape.
Shri Rajeev Sharma, Deputy Director General (Standardisation), encouraged academic institutions to pursue action-oriented collaborations and actively contribute to India’s quality ecosystem.
