California: In a startling turn of events, a tow truck driver attempted to steal a car in broad daylight at a stoplight in downtown San Francisco, leaving witnesses stunned and authorities alarmed. The incident, which occurred as the driver and her husband were running errands, underscores the brazenness of vehicle theft in the city.
According to reports, the couple was stopped at a traffic light when the tow truck driver made his move. The woman recounted the unsettling experience, stating, “We were at a stoplight and minding our own business… He started in reverse and all the lights came on. That’s when we realized, ‘Wait, something’s seriously amiss.’ His lever was descending.”
San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu has voiced concerns about similar incidents, labeling them ongoing problems in the city. One notable example involves companies like Specialty Towing, which have been accused of engaging in illegal towing practices. Allegations include towing cars of vulnerable individuals from private commercial parking lots, restricting access to vehicles, and pressuring owners to make cash payments.
The attempted car theft serves as a stark reminder of the need for heightened vigilance against vehicle-related crimes and the importance of cracking down on illegal towing operations. As authorities investigate the incident and work to address underlying issues, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
