Chaitra Navratri Day 8: Worshiping Maa Mahagauri on Ashtami

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The eighth day of Chaitra Navratri, falling on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, holds special significance for devotees as it marks the worship of Maa Mahagauri, the eighth manifestation of Goddess Durga. In Hinduism, Mahashtami holds immense importance, with devotees observing rituals like Kanya Pujan.

Significance of Maa Mahagauri:

During Chaitra Navratri, many devotees observe fasting for nine days, while some specifically fast on the first and eighth days. According to the Devi Bhagavat Purana, Mahashtami is dedicated to worshiping Ma Durga’s original form. As the consort of Lord Shiva, Mahagauri symbolizes purity and tranquility.

Description of Maa Mahagauri:

Maa Mahagauri is depicted as fair-complexioned, dressed in white attire, with four arms, and mounted on a bull. She holds a trishul (trident) and a damaru (drum) in her hands, signifying her association with Lord Shiva. Devotees believe that worshipping her eradicates all sins and brings enduring happiness.

Favorite Offerings to Maa Mahagauri:

Devotees chant the mantra “Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Ma Gauri Rupena Samsthita” during the puja. Offerings include coconut sweets and white-colored flowers, as white is her preferred color. It is believed that offering these pleases her and brings prosperity.

Rituals for Worship:

On Mahashtami, devotees wake up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes. They then perform the ritual bath of Ma’s idol with Ganga water or purified water. Offerings of white clothes, flowers, vermillion, sweets, and fruits are made. Kanya Pujan, honoring young girls, holds special significance. Finally, devotees perform the aarti and distribute prasad to everyone.
