Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami commemorated the birth anniversary of Mahadevi Verma, an illustrious figure in Indian literature, by paying tribute to her enduring contributions. Verma, known as the “Modern Meera,” is hailed for her profound impact on Hindi literature, characterized by her poetic prowess, essays, and sketch stories.
Born on March 26, 1907, Mahadevi Verma emerged as one of the four pillars of the Chhayawadi era, leaving an indelible mark on Hindi literature. Revered as Saraswati in the realm of Hindi literature by poet Nirala, Verma’s poetic brilliance transcended boundaries, earning her the prestigious Padma Vibhushan.
Verma’s literary prowess extended beyond poetry; she dedicated herself to social upliftment and women’s welfare, evident in her writings and novel “Deepshikha.” Through her works, she depicted the evolving landscape of India, both pre and post-independence, contributing significantly to societal discourse.
A pioneer in Hindi poetry, Verma introduced a softer vocabulary, drawing from Sanskrit and Bengali, transforming the language’s expressive capabilities. Her multifaceted talents extended to teaching, painting, and translation, earning her accolades and admiration from across the literary spectrum.
Recognized with numerous awards, Verma’s centenary in 2007 was celebrated worldwide, reaffirming her status as a literary luminary. Even Google honored her legacy with a dedicated Google Doodle, underscoring her enduring influence on Hindi literature and culture.
As CM Dhami pays homage to Mahadevi Verma, her legacy continues to inspire generations, symbolizing the timeless power of literature to uplift and transform society.
