Perera made his first-class debut for Colombo Cricket Club in 2006, and soon began to make an impact with his all-round skills. He was a part of the Sri Lanka A side that toured Pakistan in 2007, and played a key role in the team’s victory in the triangular series. He also scored a century in the final of the tournament.
