Former professional French footballer Franck Henry Pierre Ribéry primarily played as a left winger and was known for his pace, energy, skill, and precise passing. Ribéry has been described as a player who is fast, tricky, has great control with the ball at his feet, and is an excellent dribbler. While with Bayern, Ribéry was recognized on the world stage as one of the best players of his generation.
Ribéry has been referred to as the “jewel of French football” by Zinedine Zidane, who was a previous talisman of the French national team. Ribéry started his career in 1989 as a youth player for his local hometown club, Conti Boulogne. After seven years with the club, he joined the professional outfit Lille, but after three years he departed the club after having difficulties adjusting.
Ribéry joined US Boulogne in 1999, where he played for two years. In 2004, Ribéry earned a move to Ligue 1 club Metz after spending two more years in the amateur divisions with two clubs (Alès and Brest). In January 2005, after six months with the club, Ribéry moved to Turkey to join Galatasaray, where he won the Turkish Cup.
In controversial fashion, he departed the club in order to return to France and join Marseille after six months at Galatasaray. Ribéry spent two seasons at the club and helped the Marseillais reach the final of the Coupe de France in back-to-back seasons.
Ribéry was born on April 7th, 1983 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Pas-de-Calais. He was raised in a low-income neighborhood that was on the fringes of the city. He and his family were involved in a car accident in his hometown when he was two years old, colliding with a lorry.
He suffered serious facial injuries that resulted in more than one hundred stitches, leaving two long scars down the right side of his face and another across his brows. He referred to his 2003 construction worker job with his father as an “opportunity to learn.”
