In a nostalgic turn of events, Gautam Gambhir, the two-time IPL-winning captain with Kolkata Knight Riders, is set to make a return to the franchise, not as a player but as the mentor for the upcoming IPL 2024. The announcement brings a wave of emotions for Gambhir, who expressed his sentiments in a statement, saying, “Today, emotions well up within me, evoking a sense of nostalgia and passion, as I contemplate donning that familiar purple and gold jersey once more”.
Gambhir’s Illustrious History with KKR:
Gautam Gambhir, a T20 and ODI World Cup champion, had a prolific stint with Kolkata Knight Riders from 2011 to 2017. Under his captaincy, KKR achieved remarkable success, winning the IPL title in 2012 and 2014. Gambhir’s leadership played a pivotal role in the team’s five playoff qualifications, including the triumphant years.
Emotional Homecoming:
Gautam Gambhir’s return to KKR is described as an “emotional homecoming” by the team co-owner, Shah Rukh Khan. The mentorship role signifies a different avatar for Gambhir, who is welcomed back into the KKR family with open arms. Shah Rukh Khan acknowledges the void left by Gambhir’s absence and looks forward to the former captain instilling the renowned never-say-die spirit and sportsmanship back into the team.
Support Staff Line-up:
The KKR support staff, led by head coach Chandrakant Pandit, now boasts the experienced mentorship of Gautam Gambhir. With Abhishek Nayar as the assistant coach, James Foster as another assistant coach, Bharat Arun as the bowling coach, and Ryan ten Doeschate as the fielding coach, the team is geared up for a well-rounded coaching setup.
