Govardhan Pooja is a festival celebrated in India in honour of Lord Krishna. It is considered to be one of the most important festivals of the Hindus. The festival is celebrated on the day after Diwali, and is considered to be the day when Lord Krishna defeated the demon king Narakaasura.

Govardhan Pooja is a festival celebrated on the fourth day of the Hindu month of Kartik. It commemorates the day when Lord Krishna saved the villagers of Vrindavan from a devastating storm by holding up the Govardhan Hill on his little finger. The festival is celebrated by offering worship to Lord Krishna, and by distributing food to the poor.
What is the history of Govardhan pooja?
Govardhan pooja is celebrated on the day after Diwali, which marks the end of the five-day long Diwali celebrations. The festival is also known as Annakut or Govardhan Puja. It is believed that on this day, Lord Krishna had defeated the Indra, the king of gods. Hence, the festival is also called Bali Pratipada.
The word ‘Govardhan’ means ‘cow dung’ in Hindi. It is believed that on this day, Lord Krishna had saved the villagers of Vrindavan from the wrath of Indra, by lifting the Govardhan hill on his little finger. The festival is celebrated as a thanksgiving to Lord Krishna.
On this day, people make small mountain like structures of cow dung, which is then decorated with flowers and fruits. These mountain like structures are called ‘Girirajs’. A puja is performed to these Girirajs and then they are taken on a procession around the village or town.
The Govardhan puja is also a time for feasting. Special dishes are prepared on this day and people indulge in feasting and merrymaking. The Govardhan puja is an important festival for the Hindus and is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm.

Govardhan Pooja is a festival celebrated by Hindus to commemorate the occasion when Lord Krishna protected the people of Vraj from Indra’s wrath. According to legend, Indra became angry when he saw the people of Vraj worshipping Govardhan Hill instead of him, and decided to punish them by releasing torrents of rain. Lord Krishna came to the rescue, holding up the hill to shelter the people. Thus, Govardhan Pooja is a celebration of Krishna’s protection.
