Bollywood veteran Govinda made a significant political comeback on Thursday as he officially joined the Shiv Sena in Mumbai, marking his return to the political arena after a 14-year hiatus. The actor, renowned for his iconic roles in Hindi cinema, had earlier tasted electoral success on a Congress ticket, defeating BJP stalwart Ram Naik in the Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat.
Welcoming Govinda into the party fold, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde praised the actor’s widespread popularity and expressed confidence in his potential contributions to state affairs. Govinda, fondly known as Chi Chi, reiterated his commitment to serving society, particularly in the realm of art and culture.
Reflecting on his previous foray into politics, Govinda emphasized his unexpected return to the field, highlighting the transformative developments witnessed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Maharashtra government. He lauded the progress achieved in the state under Shinde’s tenure and pledged to focus on initiatives aimed at enhancing Maharashtra’s aesthetic appeal and cultural growth.
Govinda’s decision to join Shiv Sena holds sentimental significance, considering his family’s longstanding association with the party’s founder, Balasaheb Thackeray. The actor expressed gratitude for the opportunity and attributed his political resurgence to a divine blessing.
Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora extended a warm welcome to Govinda, emphasizing their enduring friendship spanning over 25 years. Recalling their shared electoral journey in 2004, Deora underscored the actor’s steadfast commitment to public service and expressed optimism for their collaboration within Shiv Sena.
Govinda’s return to the political arena adds a new dimension to Maharashtra’s political landscape, with his blend of celebrity status and grassroots appeal poised to make a significant impact on state affairs.
