The festival celebrates the legend of King Hiranyakashyapu and his son Prahlad. According to the legend, Hiranyakashyapu was a king who was very proud of himself. However, his son Prahlad disagreed with him. Prahlad was a very pious boy and he worshipped Lord Vishnu, the Hindu god of protection. Hiranyakashyapu tried to kill Prahlad several times but Prahlad was always saved by Lord Vishnu. Finally, Hiranyakashyapu asked his sister Holika to kill Prahlad. Holika had a special power. She could enter into a fire without being harmed. Hiranyakashyapu thought that if Holika entered into the fire with Prahlad, Prahlad would be killed. However, Prahlad prayed to Lord Vishnu and he saved Prahlad from the fire. Holika was burnt to death.
Dhanteras is celebrated to commemorate the victory of good over evil. People celebrate the festival by worshipping Lord Vishnu and by buying gold, silver and other expensive items. They believe that buying these items will bring them good luck and prosperity.
