Port Blair, August 15, 2023 – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported heavy to very heavy rainfall lashing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the past few days, leading to concerns over potential flooding and waterlogging in various areas. The region, known for its tropical climate, has been experiencing a spell of intense monsoon showers, with meteorologists closely monitoring the situation.
According to IMD officials, the islands have been witnessing a consistent and substantial amount of rainfall, raising the risk of landslides and flash floods in vulnerable regions. The weather agency issued a cautionary advisory to residents and local authorities, urging them to take necessary precautions and stay updated with weather forecasts.
The heavy rainfall, while essential for the region’s water resources and ecosystem, has prompted concerns over disruptions to daily life, transportation, and infrastructure. Efforts are being made to strike a balance between harnessing the benefits of the monsoon while safeguarding the well-being and safety of the island residents.
Inhabitants have been advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours, and follow guidelines from local authorities. The situation is being closely monitored by both meteorological experts and governmental agencies to ensure a swift response to any emerging challenges.
