Michigan: The tragic murder of 25-year-old Ruby Garcia in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has reignited debates over immigration policies and border security after it was revealed that the suspect, Brandon Ortiz-Vite, had been deported under the Trump administration only to re-enter the United States illegally.

Garcia’s life was cut short in a senseless act of violence, allegedly committed by Ortiz-Vite, who investigators believe was attempting to carjack Garcia. Her body was discovered abandoned with gunshot wounds on the side of highway U.S. 131 in downtown Grand Rapids.

Ortiz-Vite’s deportation to Mexico on September 29, 2020, was confirmed by an ICE spokesperson, who stated that he had been ordered removed by an immigration judge with the Justice Department’s Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR) before his deportation. However, Ortiz-Vite later returned to the U.S. illegally at an unknown date.

Described as “a great person all around” by her sister Mavi, Ruby Garcia was remembered for her infectious smile, love for travel, dedication to her work at a local greenhouse, & her close bond with family & friends.

In the wake of Garcia’s tragic death, Mavi has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover the unexpected expenses associated with her sister’s funeral services. The outpouring of support from the community underscores the impact of Garcia’s loss and the need for justice in her case.

The heartbreaking story of Ruby Garcia serves as a poignant reminder of the human toll of immigration-related issues and the importance of effective border control measures. As debates over immigration policies continue, Garcia’s memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
