The 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou came to a spectacular conclusion, leaving India beaming with pride as the nation clinched a historic medal tally of 107 medals, including a remarkable 28 gold medals. The achievement shattered previous records and marked a significant milestone in India’s sporting journey.
A Glimpse into India’s Sporting Evolution
Kiren Rijiju, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, reflected on India’s remarkable journey in the Asian Games. He recalled a time when India’s presence on the Asian Games podium was much more modest, with only one gold medal in Kabaddi at the 1990 Beijing Asian Games. Even in the 1986 Seoul Asian Games, where India secured five gold medals, four of them were single-handedly claimed by the legendary athlete PT Usha.
Rijiju emphasized that while India’s athletes always gave their best, the crucial support system needed to foster their talents was often lacking.
The Transformational Impact of “Khelo India”
Kiren Rijiju took a moment to acknowledge the significant role played by the “Khelo India” initiative in the resurgence of Indian sports. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the launch of “Khelo India” and for the unwavering support provided to athletes.
“Khelo India” has been instrumental in identifying and nurturing sporting talent across the country, providing them with the necessary infrastructure, coaching, and financial support to compete at the highest levels. The program has played a pivotal role in India’s emergence as a sporting powerhouse.

Rijiju noted that today’s Indian athletes are a testament to the country’s growing prowess in sports. They are brimming with confidence, determination, and the belief that they can compete on the world stage. These athletes train relentlessly, pushing their boundaries to bring glory to the nation.
