With less than 24 hours remaining before the IPL 2024 Retentions deadline, significant franchise movements have already started making waves. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have made a noteworthy decision, parting ways with Shardul Thakur, who held the distinction of being the most expensive trade buy in IPL history, acquired for a hefty INR 10.75 Cr. On the flip side, Delhi Capitals have opted to retain swashbuckling opener Prithvi Shaw, showing confidence in the Mumbai batsman despite his recent injury setbacks.
Shardul Thakur’s Departure from KKR: A Costly Trade Unraveled
The bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur, who joined KKR in the previous season after a stint with Delhi Capitals, is set to find a new home in the upcoming IPL edition. Thakur’s performance in the 2023 season was underwhelming, scoring only 113 runs from 11 innings and managing just seven wickets with the ball. This downturn in form possibly led to KKR’s decision to release the two-time IPL winner, signaling the end of his brief stint with the franchise.
KKR’s Struggles and Thakur’s Limited Impact
Despite being a seasoned campaigner, Shardul Thakur could not steer KKR to a playoff berth in the 2023 season. The team, which clinched the IPL title in 2012 and 2014, languished in the bottom half of the points table, winning only six out of 14 matches. Thakur’s limited impact with both bat and ball seemingly did not align with KKR’s expectations, prompting the franchise to make a strategic decision ahead of the retention deadline.
Delhi Capitals’ Vote of Confidence in Prithvi Shaw
In contrast to Thakur’s departure, Delhi Capitals have shown faith in the explosive talent of Prithvi Shaw. Despite Shaw’s recent knee injury, sustained during his county championship stint with Northamptonshire, the franchise has decided to retain the Mumbai opener. Shaw, who started his IPL journey with Delhi, faced scrutiny for his limited success in the previous season, managing only 106 runs from eight outings.
Shaw’s Recovery Journey and Franchise Loyalty
Prithvi Shaw’s road to recovery has seen him miss out on both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, Delhi Capitals’ decision to retain him signals the franchise’s belief in his potential and a commitment to supporting his rehabilitation. Shaw’s earlier exploits, including a double century and a hundred for Northamptonshire, underline his batting prowess, making him a crucial asset for Delhi Capitals when fully fit.
