In a strategic move at the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai, Sunrisers Hyderabad successfully secured the services of Sri Lanka’s leg-spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga, at his base price of Rs. 1.5 crore. This acquisition adds a valuable asset to the Sunrisers’ bowling arsenal, enhancing their spin options for the upcoming season.
Wanindu Hasaranga first made his mark in the IPL in 2021 when Royal Challengers Bangalore enlisted him as a mid-season replacement for Adam Zampa. Following a successful stint, the Bengaluru-based franchise opted to retain him in the mega auction the following year, securing his services for a substantial fee of Rs. 10.75 crores. Throughout three seasons, Wanindu Hasaranga featured in 26 matches, claiming an impressive 35 wickets at an economy rate of 8.14.
The Sri Lankan leg-spinner showcased his exceptional form earlier in the season, leading both the runs and wickets tally in the Lankan Premier League. His all-around contributions make him a valuable asset for any T20 franchise, and Sunrisers Hyderabad recognizes the potential he brings to the table.
Known for his variations and ability to outfox batsmen with his leg spin, Wanindu Hasaranga boasts an impressive record in T20 cricket. With 216 wickets from 157 T20 matches at an average of 16.99, he has established himself as a potent force in the shortest format of the game. Beyond his bowling prowess, Wanindu Hasaranga is a capable batsman, amassing over 1700 T20 runs at a strike rate of 143.08.
