Chhattisgarh: The National Center for Seismology (NCS) has issued a report on a mild earthquake that occurred in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, on January 14, 2024, at 14:18:00 IST. The earthquake measured a magnitude of 3.1 and had a depth of 5 km.

The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be located 50 km north of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, with geographical coordinates at Lat: 22.53 and Long: 82.15. While earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered mild, they serve as a reminder of the seismic activity prevalent in certain regions.

“The NCS, responsible for monitoring and providing data on seismic events in India, plays a crucial role in disseminating timely information to the public. In this instance, the earthquake serves as a prompt for residents and authorities to remain vigilant and prepared for potential aftershocks, even if of lower magnitude”.

Chhattisgarh, like other parts of the Indian subcontinent, is situated in a seismically active zone, and occasional tremors are not uncommon. Understanding the region’s susceptibility to seismic activity underscores the importance of robust infrastructure and preparedness measures to minimize the potential impact on communities.
