National Geoscience Awards – 2022 to be Conferred by the President of India in New Delhi

The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu will confer the prestigious National Geoscience Awards – 2022 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in New Delhi on 24th July 2023. The ceremony will be graced by the presence of the Minister of Coal, Mines & Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Pralhad Joshi, and Minister of State for Mines, Coal & Railways, Shri Raosaheb Patil Danve. Instituted in 1966, the National Geoscience Awards (NGA) recognize exceptional individuals and organizations for their excellence, dedication, and innovation in the field of Geosciences.

The NGA is awarded in three categories:

  1. National Geoscience Award for Lifetime Achievement,
  2. National Young Geoscientist Award,
  3. National Geoscience Award in various fields of geosciences.

The awards encompass areas such as Mineral Discovery and Exploration, Basic Geosciences, Applied Geosciences and Mining, Mineral Beneficiation, and Sustainable Mineral Development.

This year, a total of 168 nominations were received for NGA 2022 across different award categories. The selection process involved a meticulous three-stage screening. From these nominations, 10 National Geoscience Awards were chosen, including one for Lifetime Achievement, eight in different geoscience fields, and one for a young geoscientist. The President of India will present these 10 awards to 22 deserving geoscientists.

Dr. Om Narain Bhargava, renowned for his groundbreaking work in the Himalayas spanning four decades, will receive the National Geoscience Award for Lifetime Achievement. On the other hand, Dr. Amiya Kumar Samal, Assistant Professor at Banaras Hindu University, will be honored with the National Young Geoscientist Award for his significant contributions in understanding the variation of Sub-Continental Lithospheric Mantle (SCLM) below different Archean cratons of the Indian shield.

The National Geoscience Awards ceremony will witness the presence of distinguished geoscientists, scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders, making it a momentous occasion to celebrate excellence in the realm of Geosciences.
