On the solemn occasion of the death anniversary of Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Padma Bhushan awardee and revered Hindi poet, Nitin Gadkari pays a heartfelt tribute to the literary luminary. Harivansh Rai Bachchan, born on 27 November 1907, left an indelible mark on Hindi poetry, particularly during the post-Chhayavad period.
Bachchan’s poetic masterpiece, “Madhushala,” stands as a timeless work that resonates with readers across generations. His profound exploration of life, love, and spirituality has made him a central figure in the landscape of Hindi literature. Beyond his poetic contributions, Bachchan’s role as a Hindi expert in the Ministry of External Affairs and his tenure as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha underscore his multifaceted impact on Indian society.
Nitin Gadkari, recognizing the cultural significance of Bachchan’s literary legacy, takes a moment to honor the poet’s memory. The tributes extend beyond the realm of poetry, acknowledging the poet’s familial connections, particularly as the father of Indian film industry icon, Amitabh Bachchan.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s early life in Prayag, born to a Kayastha family, laid the foundation for his intellectual pursuits. His educational journey, from Urdu to Hindi in a Kayastha school, culminated in an M.A. in English from Allahabad University and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University. His scholarly pursuits, including research on the works of renowned English poet W.B. Yeats, showcased his commitment to literary excellence.
The poet’s personal life, marked by the tragedy of losing his first wife, Shyama, to TB in 1936, and later finding companionship with Teji Suri, a Punjabi woman associated with theater and singing, adds depth to his narrative. Through joys and sorrows, Bachchan continued to contribute to the literary world, composing poems like ‘Need Ka Nirman Phir.’
Nitin Gadkari’s tribute serves as a poignant acknowledgment of Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s enduring influence on the cultural fabric of India.
