IPL Auction 2024: The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction witnessed an unprecedented bidding war as Pat Cummins, the triumphant captain of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, became the most expensive player in the history of the tournament. Four franchises engaged in a fierce battle for Cummins, making the auction one for the record books.
In the end, it was Sunrisers Hyderabad who emerged victorious in securing the services of the Australia captain for the upcoming IPL season, shelling out a whopping INR 20.5 crores. This deal surpassed the previous record set by Sam Curran at INR 18.5 crores from the previous year.
“The bidding war unfolded with powerhouses Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians initially driving up the stakes. However, the competition intensified as Royal Challengers Bangalore entered the scene, setting the stage for an epic tussle”.
Pat Cummins’ desirability soared after his stellar performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India, where he led Australia to a historic sixth title. His leadership skills, coupled with a formidable all-round performance, made him the crown jewel of the IPL auction.
“Sunrisers Hyderabad’s successful bid not only made history but also added a significant asset to their squad. Cummins’ ability to deliver under pressure, both as a captain and a prolific player, positions him as a game-changer for the upcoming IPL season”.
