Although he remained at Blšany until the end of the 2000–01 season, Čech signed a 5+1⁄2-year contract with Sparta Prague at the age of 18 in January 2001. The record for the longest time elapsed without conceding a goal in the Czech professional league was broken in November 2001 by Čech, who stretched his run to 855 minutes.
