PM Modi Addresses ‘Sikkim@50’ Golden Jubilee Celebration

In a historic celebration of Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee of statehood, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi virtually addressed the enthusiastic ‘Sikkim@50’ programme today. Though adverse weather conditions hindered his visit to Gangtok, his heartfelt message echoed deep appreciation for Sikkim’s remarkable 50-year journey of unity, progress, and sustainable development.

Themed ‘Where Progress Meets Purpose, and Nature Nurtures Growth’, the event marked a significant milestone not just in the state’s history but also in the larger narrative of India’s inclusive development.

A Day of Celebration and Reflection

Prime Minister Modi began his address by warmly congratulating the people of Sikkim, acknowledging their vibrant spirit, cultural pride, and remarkable achievements. He expressed his regret for not being able to attend the celebrations in person due to adverse weather conditions and assured that he would visit Sikkim soon to join in their celebrations and witness their progress firsthand.

“Today is a celebration of the dreams, determination, and achievements of the people of Sikkim over the past 50 years,” he said, commending Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and his team for organizing a grand and memorable event. He called the golden jubilee a moment to honor the people’s resilience and collective progress.

Sikkim: A Beacon of Sustainable Development

Reflecting on Sikkim’s journey since it joined the Indian Union in 1975, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that Sikkim is not only geographically integrated with India but also deeply connected with its soul. “The belief that development must reach every citizen is what drives India’s success—and Sikkim embodies this principle,” he stated.

He praised Sikkim as a “model of sustainable development,” citing its achievement as a 100% organic state, its abundant biodiversity, and impressive per capita income. Acknowledging the numerous “shining stars” emerging from Sikkim, he affirmed that they have enriched India’s cultural and national identity, declaring, “Sikkim is the pride of the nation.”

A Decade of Transformation in Northeast

Underscoring his government’s commitment to Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, the Prime Minister reaffirmed that balanced development—ensuring that no region is left behind—remains at the heart of national progress. Over the last decade, the government has placed the Northeast at the center of national development through the Act East and Act Fast policies.

Recalling the Northeast Investment Summit in Delhi, he shared that significant investments are being made in the region, including Sikkim. These will open doors for new employment opportunities and economic growth for the youth.

Unveiling the Future: Infrastructure, Healthcare, and Connectivity

The Prime Minister detailed the launch and foundation stone-laying of multiple development projects across the state. These included:

  • A 500-bedded district hospital in Namchi worth ₹750 crore.
  • A passenger ropeway at Sangachoeling, Pelling.
  • The statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Atal Amrit Udyan.
  • Several road and highway projects, including the Bagdogra-Gangtok Expressway and the Atal Setu enhancing connectivity with Darjeeling.
  • Sevoke-Rangpo railway line, integrating Sikkim into India’s national rail network.

These developments, the Prime Minister said, reflect a new era of connectivity and opportunity for Sikkim, where geographical challenges are being addressed with modern solutions like ropeways and expressways.

Health, Security, and Welfare for All

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the government’s strong commitment to providing quality and affordable healthcare. He pointed to the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which has benefited over 25,000 people in Sikkim with free medical treatment. Additionally, he announced that all senior citizens above 70 years of age will now be eligible for free medical care worth up to ₹5 lakh.

He affirmed, “Healthcare is a fundamental right, not a luxury, and we are committed to leaving no citizen behind.”

Organic Economy and Export Revolution

Calling Sikkim a torchbearer in organic agriculture, the Prime Minister shared that the first export consignment of Dalle Khursani chili was sent abroad in March 2025. He lauded farmers for leading a new wave of agricultural prosperity.

Taking this a step further, he announced India’s first organic fisheries cluster in Soreng district. “Sikkim will now be known not just for organic farming, but also for organic fishing—creating new livelihood avenues for youth,” he said.

A Global Destination in the Making

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need to position Sikkim as a global tourism destination—not just a hill station. With its unique blend of natural beauty, heritage, and spirituality, Sikkim has unmatched potential. The inauguration of the Golden Jubilee Skywalk and Convention Center in Gangtok were hailed as important steps toward transforming Sikkim into a hub for wellness, adventure, and conference tourism.

“Sikkim is ready to host global artists, spiritual seekers, and adventure enthusiasts alike,” he said, stressing that the world must experience the magic of Sikkim.

Investing in Youth, Honoring Sporting Legacy

Recognizing the contributions of Sikkim’s sporting legends like Bhaichung Bhutia, Tarundeep Rai, and Jaslal Pradhan, the Prime Minister said that Sikkim’s youth are crucial to India’s rise as a sporting superpower. With a new sports complex inaugurated in Gangtok and focused attention under the Khelo India scheme, he envisioned every village producing future champions.

“Sports is not just participation—it’s about winning with determination,” he added.

A Call for Unity and National Resolve

While celebrating Sikkim’s achievements, the Prime Minister also addressed the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. He condemned the incident as an attack on humanity and declared that India had responded firmly with Operation Sindoor, sending a clear message to its enemies.

“Our unity is our strength. And when tested, India stands together—stronger than ever,” he declared.

Vision 2047: A Green, Global, and Glorious Sikkim

Looking ahead to 2047—when India will celebrate 100 years of independence and Sikkim 75 years of statehood—Prime Minister Modi outlined an ambitious vision:

  • Sikkim as a Green Model State for the world.
  • 100% solar-powered homes.
  • Leadership in organic food exports, agro- and tourism startups.
  • Digital transaction adoption in every corner.
  • Becoming a model of waste-to-wealth innovation.

“Let us take a collective pledge to propel Sikkim toward even greater heights of development, sustainability, and global recognition over the next 25 years,” he concluded.

A Grand Occasion with Lasting Legacy

The commemorative event also saw the release of a special coin, souvenir coin, and stamp to mark 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood. Present at the event were Sikkim’s Governor Shri Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang, and other distinguished dignitaries.

With a year-long series of cultural and developmental events planned under the theme “Sunaulo, Samriddha and Samarth Sikkim” (Golden, Prosperous, and Capable Sikkim), the Golden Jubilee celebrations will not only honor the past but also set the stage for a bold and bright future.

Sikkim@50 isn’t just a commemoration—it is a call to action, a celebration of resilience, and a promise of even greater achievements to come.
