Arunachal Pradesh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant milestone in India’s energy and infrastructure development by laying the foundation stone for the 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Hydropower Project in Arunachal Pradesh. This momentous occasion occurred during the Viksit Bharat Viksit North East Program in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, on March 9, 2024.

The event, attended by dignitaries including the Governor and Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, showcased the Prime Minister’s dedication to fostering sustainable growth and progress in the Northeast region. Prime Minister Modi underscored the start of the Dibang Multipurpose Hydropower Project’s construction in Arunachal Pradesh, while simultaneously inaugurating a Solar Power project in Tripura.

Highlighting the significance of the Dibang project, Prime Minister Modi noted its role as India’s highest dam structure, contributing to flood moderation, electricity generation, and socioeconomic development in the region. With a projected cost of over Rs. 31,875 crores, the project is poised to be a transformative force, generating clean and green energy for the Northern Grid and creating employment opportunities during the construction and operation phases.

The Dibang Multipurpose Hydropower Project, located near Munli village in the Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh, will feature a 278-meter-high dam, making it the highest Concrete-Gravity Dam in India. Utilizing the advanced Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) technique, the project aims to set global benchmarks in dam construction, with a planned peak concrete placement exceeding 5 lakh cubic meters per month.

Projected to generate 11,223 million units of Hydropower annually, the Dibang Project aligns with India’s commitment to clean energy transition and sustainable development. It will also contribute to the state’s progress by providing 12% free power and an additional 1% for the Local Area Development Fund, fostering socio-economic growth in Arunachal Pradesh.

Designed as an energy storage project with flood moderation capabilities, the Dibang Multipurpose Hydropower Project represents a paradigm shift towards renewable energy infrastructure in India. With its commissioning scheduled for February 2032, the project signifies a bold step towards achieving India’s Net Zero target while driving inclusive growth and prosperity in the Northeast region.
