Nashik: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a recent visit to Nashik, paid profound tributes to Swami Vivekananda, recognizing the enduring impact of the revered spiritual leader’s thoughts and vision. The Prime Minister expressed how Swami Vivekananda’s teachings continue to serve as a source of inspiration for individuals across generations.
Swami Vivekananda, born Narendranath Datta, emerged as a key figure in Indian philosophy, religion, and nationalism during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His early life in Calcutta revealed a deep inclination towards spirituality, eventually leading him to find his guru, Ramakrishna. Following Ramakrishna’s passing, Vivekananda embarked on extensive travels across India, witnessing the challenges faced by his countrymen under British rule.
“Motivated to make a difference, Swami Vivekananda decided to take his message beyond the borders of India. He embarked on a journey to the United States, where he gained widespread recognition after delivering a powerful speech at the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago. The opening words of his address, “Sisters and brothers of America,” resonated deeply and introduced Hinduism to the American audience”.
His impact was so profound that a contemporary American newspaper described him as “an orator by divine right and undoubtedly the greatest figure at the Parliament.” Following this success, Swami Vivekananda continued to deliver lectures across the United States, England, and Europe, spreading the core tenets of Hindu philosophy and establishing Vedanta Societies in New York and San Francisco.
“Back in India, he founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission, institutions dedicated to spiritual training, charity, social work, and education. Swami Vivekananda played a pivotal role in contemporary Hindu reform movements and contributed significantly to the concept of nationalism in colonial India”.
His influence extended beyond his lifetime, and Swami Vivekananda is now widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern India, recognized as a patriotic saint. His birthday is celebrated as National Youth Day in India, emphasizing the enduring relevance of his teachings to the youth.
Prime Minister Modi, in acknowledging Swami Vivekananda’s legacy, highlighted the monk’s crucial role in shaping India’s philosophical landscape and promoting its cultural heritage globally. The Prime Minister’s tribute underscores the continued importance of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings in fostering national pride, spiritual growth, and a sense of purpose among the Indian populace.
