Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the birth anniversary of Babu Jagjivan Ram, fondly known as Babuji, by paying homage to the stalwart’s immense contributions to India’s freedom struggle and political landscape.

Born on April 5, 1908, in Bihar, Jagjivan Ram emerged as a pivotal figure in India’s quest for social equality and justice. His instrumental role in founding the All India Depressed Classes League in 1935 underscored his commitment to uplift the marginalized sections of society.

Elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1937, Babu Jagjivan Ram swiftly became a voice for the oppressed, championing the cause of rural laborers and advocating for their rights. His entry into Jawaharlal Nehru’s interim government in 1946 marked the beginning of a distinguished political career dedicated to public service.

As the youngest minister in Nehru’s cabinet, Babu Jagjivan Ram spearheaded initiatives to ensure social justice found expression in India’s Constitution. His tenure as Defence Minister during the Indo-Pak war of 1971, culminating in the creation of Bangladesh, showcased his leadership and strategic acumen.

Jagjivan Ram’s pivotal role in the Green Revolution and modernization of Indian agriculture during his tenure as Union Agriculture Minister left an indelible mark on the nation’s development trajectory. His unwavering commitment to addressing challenges, such as the 1974 drought, epitomized his dedication to serving the people.

Despite his alignment with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the Emergency, Jagjivan Ram’s departure from the Congress in 1977 underscored his steadfast principles. Joining the Janata Party alliance, he served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1977 to 1979, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and public service.

At his passing in 1986, Babu Jagjivan Ram stood as the last surviving minister of the Interim Government, leaving behind a legacy of over 30 years of exemplary service to the nation.
