In a dramatic turn of events at the 2024 IPL Auction in Dubai, Indian fast bowler Harshal Patel found a new home with the Punjab Kings, who secured his services for an impressive Rs. 11.75 crore. The bidding war for the seasoned cricketer saw intense competition between franchises, making Harshal one of the most sought-after players in the auction.
Having previously played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the last three seasons, Harshal Patel had a remarkable stint in the 2021 IPL season, emerging as the highest wicket-taker. However, the 2023 campaign posed challenges for the right-arm bowler, managing only 14 wickets at a relatively high economy rate of 9.66. Consequently, RCB released him ahead of the auction.
The bidding war for Harshal Patel began with Gujarat Titans, but it was the Punjab Kings who ultimately clinched the deal. Lucknow Super Giants entered the fray, driving the bidding price to Rs. 11.75 crore, making Harshal one of the most expensive picks in the auction.
Harshal Patel, aged 33, started his IPL journey with RCB, moved to Delhi Capitals in 2018, and returned to RCB in 2021. His all-around skills and ability to deliver impactful performances with the ball make him a valuable addition to the Punjab Kings’ squad.
Preity Zinta, co-owner of Punjab Kings, expressed her delight, saying, “Extremely happy, and he’s an unbelievable bowler. Harshal, welcome to the Punjab Kings. We were just surprised he was released.” The Punjab Kings aim to leverage Harshal Patel’s experience and prowess to bolster their bowling lineup in the upcoming IPL season.
