Rachin Ravindra: A Rising Star Prepares for Test Challenges Against Bangladesh

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

As New Zealand prepares to take on Bangladesh in a two-Test series starting on 28 November, all eyes are on the rising star, Rachin Ravindra. The talented all-rounder gained international recognition with a scintillating performance in the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Ravindra’s World Cup campaign was nothing short of spectacular, amassing 578 runs at an impressive average of 64.22, including three centuries and two half-centuries. His left-arm spin also contributed significantly, securing five wickets with a best bowling figure of 2/21. Now, as the focus shifts to the red-ball format, Ravindra is poised to make a substantial impact in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.

The 22-year-old, who has played in only three Tests so far, is no stranger to the challenges of Test cricket. His last Test appearance was a home fixture against Bangladesh in 2022, and since then, his prolific run in the World Cup has elevated him to contention for a spot in New Zealand’s Test XI.

In a video released by New Zealand Cricket, Ravindra shared insights into his approach towards the upcoming Test series, drawing from his recent white-ball experience. Emphasizing the need for adaptability, he acknowledged the shift in mindset from the aggressive intent of limited-overs cricket to the patience required in Test matches.

Ravindra explained, “Returning to red-ball cricket after the recent white-ball experience in the World Cup is something I find enjoyable. It reflects a positive intent, as you’re almost always in the mindset of seeking to score.” “However, the approach here is contingent on the conditions. Considering the pitch dynamics, it’s likely that we’ll temper that approach a bit, taking fewer risks. Despite this, you can maintain your natural game by comprehending the surface and allowing the situation of the game to guide your decisions.”

Acknowledging the longevity of Test matches, Ravindra highlighted the importance of maintaining calmness within the team, particularly during the transition from one-dayers to the red-ball format.

“There is frequently a misunderstanding regarding the actual length of a Test match. With five days of play and 90 overs each day, there’s ample time available. It’s crucial for us to instill a sense of calmness within the team, transitioning smoothly from the fast-paced nature of one-dayers to the more patient approach required in red-ball cricket”.

Ravindra also discussed the nuances of playing Test cricket in the sub-continent, emphasizing the need for adaptability to different playing conditions.

“It’s a different role for sure; it’s not a new ball [role in Bangladesh] – I might come in and straight away face a spinner. So, it’s about understanding and figuring out how to adapt your game strategy to become accustomed to facing slower-paced bowling rather than dealing with seam bowling at the beginning of an innings.”

The left-arm spinner is well aware of his ability to contribute with the ball, and based on his past experience in Bangladesh, including a T20I tour in 2021, he has formulated plans to optimize his left-arm spin.

New Zealand’s tour of Bangladesh promises to be a riveting cricketing spectacle, with the two Tests scheduled to be played in Sylhet and Mirpur. As Rachin Ravindra prepares to take on the challenges posed by the Tigers, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the unfolding of his next chapter in international cricket.
