First CDS General Bipin Rawat: In the annals of India’s military history, the name General Bipin Rawat stands as a testament to leadership, valor, and dedication. As we mark the anniversary of his untimely demise on 8th December 2021, it is imperative to reflect on the remarkable journey of the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Indian Armed Forces.
Early Years and Military Service
General Bipin Rawat, born on 16th March 1958, embarked on his military journey with a commission into the 5th battalion, the 11 Gorkha Rifles. His early experiences in the 1987 Sino-Indian skirmish showcased his mettle, leading his battalion against the Chinese People’s Liberation Army in the Sumdorong Chu valley.
With a keen focus on high-altitude warfare, Rawat spent a decade engaged in counter-insurgency operations. His instructional tenure at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, further shaped his leadership acumen.
A Distinguished Career
As a colonel, Rawat commanded the 5th battalion, the 11 Gorkha Rifles, earning the Vishisht Seva Medal for his exemplary service. His roles as Colonel Military Secretary and Deputy Military Secretary underscored his diverse contributions to the military machinery.
Rawat’s commitment to duty was recognized with accolades such as the Sena Medal and Yudh Seva Medal during his tenure as Brigadier. His leadership during the UN mission in Congo, commanding MONUSCO, demonstrated strategic prowess, earning him the Force Commander’s Commendation.
Chief of Defence Staff Era
Assuming the role of the first Chief of Defence Staff in January 2020, General Bipin Rawat ushered in a new era for the Indian Armed Forces. His vision included the establishment of joint and integrated commands, transforming India’s military structure.
Despite challenges in implementing unified theatre commands, Rawat’s strategic foresight aimed to enhance the country’s defense capabilities. His 43-year-long career was adorned with multiple awards, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and the prestigious Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 2022.
Legacy and Tragedy
On that fateful day of 8th December 2021, General Bipin Rawat, along with his wife and staff, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash. The incident occurred near the Defence Services Staff College, where Rawat was scheduled to deliver a lecture.
The Indian Air Force confirmed the heartbreaking news, marking the end of a distinguished military career. Group Captain Varun Singh, Rawat’s liaison officer, initially survived the crash but succumbed to injuries later.
