In 2019, he was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, by his successor, President Ram Nath Kovind. Shri Pranab Mukherjee’s political journey commenced in 1969 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi facilitated his election to the Rajya Sabha on a Congress ticket.
