A former professional footballer, Romário de Souza Faria Figueiredo is a Brazilian politician. He was a prolific striker renowned for his clinical finishing, and he scored over 750 goals. He was the first player to score at least 100 goals for three different clubs. Romário is widely considered one of the greatest players of all time.
Romário was one of the stars for Brazil in their 1994 FIFA World Cup triumph, receiving the Golden Ball as a player of the tournament. The same year he was named FIFA World Player of the Year. He was ranked fifth in the FIFA Player of the Century internet poll in 1999, elected to the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in 2002, and named In 2004, the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players were released. Romário began his professional career in Brazil before moving to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands in 1988.
He scored a total of 165 goals in 167 games during his five seasons at PSV, during which the club became Eredivisie champions three times. In 1993, he moved to FC Barcelona where he became part of Johan Cruyff’s “Dream Team”, forming an exceptional strike partnership with Hristo Stoichkov. In his first season, he won La Liga and finished as the top goalscorer with 30 goals in 33 matches. Within the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, during the second half of his career, Romário played for clubs.
He won the Brazilian league title with Vasco da Gama in 2000, and he was the top scorer three times in the league. He played briefly at the end of his career in Qatar, the United States, and Australia. He was considered a master of the confined space of the penalty area because of his rapid speed over short distances, which took him away from defenders. He was also renowned for his trademark toe-poke finish.
Pelé, Neymar, and Ronaldo are the three highest goalscorers for the Brazil national team, with Romário in fourth place with 55 goals in 70 appearances. He has scored 155 goals in the Brazilian league, which puts him third on the all-time list. He has scored 780 goals in 1000 official games, which ranks him as the seventh-highest goalscorer in the history of football.
