Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed former cricketing legend Sanath Jayasuriya as its full-time “cricket consultant” for a year. This move comes as part of SLC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its cricket management structure and enhance the development of players and coaches.

In his role, Sanath Jayasuriya will take charge of overseeing both players and coaches operating at SLC’s high-performance center located in Khettarama. The focus of his responsibilities will include implementing “individual skill development strategies” for players and closely monitoring the coaching staff to ensure the optimal development of cricketing talent.

“One of the key tasks assigned to Sanath Jayasuriya is to establish national specialist skills programs, aligning them with key staff responsible for leading roles within each skill discipline. This initiative aims to elevate the standards of player development and coaching strategies in Sri Lanka”.

This appointment is particularly noteworthy as it marks Jayasuriya’s first official role with SLC since the conclusion of his two-year ban imposed by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit in 2019. The ban was a result of Sanath Jayasuriya admitting to two charges under the anti-corruption code – the failure to cooperate with an investigation and obstructing or delaying an investigation.

Amidst several recent developments within Sri Lanka Cricket, including the naming of the Upul Tharanga-led selection committee, Sanath Jayasuriya’s appointment stands out as a significant move to bring his wealth of cricketing experience into the administrative and coaching realms.
