On the 10th of December, the king of the chess game Viswanathan Anand turns 53. Former five-time World Chess Champion Viswanathan “Vishy” Anand, born 11 December 1969, is now an Indian chess grandmaster. In 1988, he became the first grandmaster from India and in 2006 he was the first player to achieve an Elo rating of 2800.
In 2022, he was elected FIDE’s deputy president. Anand won the 2000 FIDE World Chess Championship in a six-game match against Alexei Shirov, a title he held until 2002. In 2007, Viswanathan became the undisputed world champion and defended his title against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008, Veselin Topalov in 2010, and Boris Gelfand in 2012.
He lost the title to challenger Magnus Carlsen in 2013 and lost a rematch to Carlsen in 2014 after winning the 2014 Candidates Tournament. In April 2006, Anand became the 4th player in history to pass the 2800 Elo mark on the FIDE rating list, after Kramnik, Topalov, and Garry Kasparov. In the sixth-longest period on record, he occupied the number-one position for 21 months.
