Born on September 22, 1984, Thiago Emiliano da Silva is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a center-back for Premier League club Chelsea and captains the Brazil national team.
He is considered one of the best defenders in the world and one of the greatest of all time. He is known for his ability to defend well, his discipline, and his leadership. In 2002, Silva began his senior club career playing as a midfielder for RS Futebol.
He transitioned to a defensive position while at Juventude and then signed with Porto in 2004 at age 19. He moved to Dynamo Moscow on loan where he was hospitalized with a near-fatal bout of tuberculosis.
He joined Fluminense and, after recovering, won a Copa do Brasil. Silva moved to AC Milan in 2009 for a reported fee of €8 million and won a Serie A title. In 2012, Silva set a then-record for an association football transfer when he signed with Paris Saint-Germain in a transfer worth up to €42 million, becoming the most expensive defender ever at the time.
He won seven Ligue 1 titles, six Coupes de la Ligue, and five Coupes de France, and reached the 2020 UEFA Champions League Final while playing for the club. Silva ranks eighth-highest all-time for appearances and holds the record as the club’s longest-ever serving captain.
He won the UEFA Champions League in his first season at Chelsea after signing for the club on a free transfer in 2020.
