UK Announces £1 Million Aid Package for Flood-Hit Libya.

The UK has taken swift action to respond to the severe floods that have impacted Libya. The country’s Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, has announced an initial aid package of up to £1 million to provide vital assistance to those most affected by the devastating floods.

This funding aims to address the immediate needs of flood victims, particularly focusing on essential requirements such as shelter, healthcare, and sanitation. The UK is collaborating closely with trusted partners on the ground to identify and meet these urgent needs. Furthermore, the UK stands ready to extend additional support if required.

In a parallel effort to alleviate the crisis, the United Nations (UN) has allocated $10 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to aid flood relief operations in Libya. The UK is among the largest contributors to CERF, demonstrating its commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts worldwide. For 2023, the UK has pledged £52 million towards CERF’s crucial work.

To underscore the UK’s commitment to assisting Libya in the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster, the Minister for Middle East and North Africa, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, held discussions with the Head of Libya’s Presidential Council, Dr. Mohamed Menfi. During the conversation, condolences were extended, and the UK’s dedication to supporting Libya was reaffirmed.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly emphasized the UK’s commitment to providing aid to Libya during this challenging time. The funding announced will deliver life-saving assistance to the flood-affected population, with a special focus on vulnerable groups such as women, children, and those who have been displaced from their homes. The UK also pledged to maintain close coordination with the UN and Libyan authorities to determine any further assistance required.

The Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) is a humanitarian fund created under the authority of the United Nations General Assembly. Its purpose is to facilitate timely and reliable humanitarian assistance to individuals affected by natural disasters, armed conflicts, and complex emergencies. CERF achieves this by efficiently channeling resources to humanitarian agencies.

The UK proudly supports CERF and was one of its largest donors in 2022, contributing £52 million, which accounted for 10% of the fund’s total funding for the year. The UK has once again committed £52 million in 2023 and continues to advocate strongly for the life-saving operations carried out by CERF.

Overall, the United Kingdom has been the largest contributor to CERF since its inception, providing a total of $1.7 billion in core funding between 2006 and 2021. This demonstrates the UK’s steadfast commitment to addressing humanitarian crises around the world.
