Amit Shah said on Twitter, “It is believed that Sagol Kangjei, the modern-day Polo game originated in Manipur. Today, inaugurated a 122 feet Marjing polo statue at the Marjing Polo Complex in Imphal. This will surely take the legacy forward and inspire more youngsters toward the game”.
Polo is a ball game played on horseback, it is a traditional field game and one of the oldest known team sports in the world. The game is played by two opposing teams with the aim of using long-handled mallets to hit a small hard ball through the opposing team’s goal. Each team consists of four mounted riders, and the game usually lasts for one to two hours, which is called chukka or “chukkers”.
