Brazil Reacts to Elon Musk’s Defiance, Calls for Social Media Regulation

Estimated reading time: 1 minute

Brazil’s Attorney-General, Jorge Messias, has voiced strong opposition following Elon Musk’s refusal to adhere to the country’s anti-free speech demands, igniting calls for stricter regulation of social media platforms. Messias condemned Musk’s defiance, asserting that foreign billionaires should not wield unchecked power over social networks and flout legal directives, posing a threat to national authorities and the rule of law.

“We cannot tolerate a society where billionaires from abroad dominate social media platforms, disregarding court orders and challenging our legal system,” Messias stated. He emphasized the urgent need for regulatory frameworks to address such challenges and ensure accountability in the digital sphere.

“It is imperative to regulate social networks to prevent such instances,” Messias added, suggesting that previous iterations of Twitter may have acquiesced to such demands. The Attorney-General’s remarks underscore the growing concerns globally over the influence and autonomy of tech giants, prompting calls for robust regulatory measures to safeguard democratic principles and uphold legal standards in the digital age.
