Breaking: Millet Inclusion in Ration Distribution, Reduced Rice Allotment – Check Your Revised Quota

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Lucknow: In a significant stride towards promoting nutritional diversity and ensuring the well-being of its citizens, Uttar Pradesh has introduced millet in the free ration distribution system for ration card holders. The Food Department, recognizing the health benefits of millet, has issued an order to include millet as part of the monthly ration, alongside the traditional staples of rice and wheat.

Until now, beneficiaries in the state were entitled to receive 14 kg of wheat and 21 kg of rice free of cost in their 35 kg monthly ration. However, starting in February, the distribution pattern will witness a positive shift towards a more diverse and nutritionally enriched approach. Ration card holders will now receive 14 kg of wheat, 10 kg of millet, and 11 kg of rice in their monthly ration allotment.

“This move is a strategic effort by the government to encourage the consumption of millets, known for their rich nutritional profile. Millets are a powerhouse of nutrients, offering a range of health benefits such as high fiber content, essential minerals, and low glycemic index. By incorporating millet into the ration distribution, the government aims to address not only the basic sustenance needs of the population but also their long-term health and nutrition requirements”.

“The decision aligns with the broader global movement advocating for the revival of traditional and locally sourced grains. Millets, being drought-resistant and ecologically sustainable, also contribute to agricultural resilience and environmental conservation”.

The introduction of millet in the ration distribution is expected to have a positive impact on the health and nutritional status of the beneficiaries, particularly in addressing issues related to malnutrition and dietary deficiencies. It also reflects a forward-thinking approach by the Uttar Pradesh government in promoting diverse and sustainable food choices.
