His political ascent continued with notable appointments, such as Chairman of the Northern Angami Area Council in 1984 and honorary Vice President of the Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland branch.

He is a rare leader, having served as Chief Minister for five consecutive terms since 2018, with previous tenures from 2008 to 2014 and 2003 to 2008.
