Neiphiu Rio: A Stalwart Leader
Born on November 11, 1950, Neiphiu Guolhoulie Rio hails from an Angami Naga family in Tuophema. His impressive academic journey took him through prestigious institutions like Baptist English School, Kohima, Sainik School, Purulia, and later St Joseph’s College, Darjeeling, culminating in his graduation from Kohima Arts College.
A dynamic figure in student leadership during his school and college days, Neiphiu Rio entered politics at a young age. His leadership qualities were evident as he headed various organizations, including serving as the President of Kohima District United Democratic Front (UDF) Youth Wing in 1974. His political ascent continued with notable appointments, such as Chairman of the Northern Angami Area Council in 1984 and honorary Vice President of the Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland branch.
Political Legacy and Achievements
Neiphiu Rio’s political career has been marked by dedication and service to the people of Nagaland. He is a rare leader, having served as Chief Minister for five consecutive terms since 2018, with previous tenures from 2008 to 2014 and 2003 to 2008. This remarkable feat makes him the longest-serving Chief Minister in Nagaland’s history, reflecting the trust and confidence reposed in his leadership.
Beyond state borders, Neiphiu Rio represented Nagaland in the Lok Sabha as a Member of Parliament from 2014 to 2018, contributing to national governance and policy discourse.
