The last assembly elections took place on November 28, 2018, leading to the formation of the government by the Indian National Congress, with Kamal Nath assuming the role of Chief Minister.

A turning point occurred in March 2020 when 22 Congress MLAs resigned, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with Jyotiraditya Scindia. This mass defection resulted in the collapse of the state government, leading Chief Minister Kamal Nath to resign on March 20, 2020. Subsequently, the BJP formed the government, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan assumed the position of Chief Minister. The defector MLAs were re-elected on the BJP symbol in the by-election, solidifying the party’s absolute majority.
