Interesting Facts about Bacteria

Bacteria are small, microscopic organisms that can live on just about anything. These little microbes are some of the most abundant forms of living beings on Earth and have an important role in the natural world. Today, they’re used in everything from medicines to food production. However, these tiny bugs are also responsible for a range of health issues like abscesses and diseases caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Highlights

What is Bacteria?

Bacteria is a type of life that live in small numbers on and in the body. Bacteria are living cells that do not perform photosynthesis and rely on the body for their food. Specific bacteria live on and in our digestive tract, mouth, nose, lungs and skin. There are many types of bacteria including the good kind that help to keep the body healthy.

How many microbes are there in your body?

There are ten times as many microbes in your body as there are human cells. In fact, your microbiome is made up of all the bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms that live on and inside you. It also includes yeasts, molds and protozoa which are single-celled organisms such as amoebas.

When did the first bacteria appear on Earth?

The Earth was born about 4.5 billion years ago, and the first bacteria appeared about 3.5 billion years ago. These single-celled organisms lived in the oceans and were primarily photosynthetic. They would take up carbon dioxide and water, releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere. The rest of the planet came together over time, and as more and more carbon dioxide was taken out of the atmosphere by these organisms, oxygen levels rose to modern levels of 98%.

Types of bacteria

Bacteria are one of the most common organisms in the world. Some bacteria have no cell nucleus, while others have many nuclei. When a bacterium dies, it may become food for other bacteria in the same environment. There are three types of bacteria. There is the Good Bacteria that helps your body fight off infections and diseases, the Bad Bacteria that make it easier for you to become sick and die, and Viruses that only affect plants.

The Largest Bacterium

The largest bacterium known to man is called Deinococcus radiodurans. It’s a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that can survive radiation. It was found in the late 1980s. Did you know that the largest bacterium is half a micrometer long? That’s less than one hundredth of 1/4th of an inch! This bacterium can be found in the human throat. What makes this bacterium so special? Well, it is able to split its cell walls and duplicate itself within hours. It also kills other bacteria by absorbing their food before they can eat it.

Making your own food using bacteria

Bacteria are the most important and yet vital components of life. There are more bacteria in our body than there are cells to be found in our entire body. They can survive on pretty much anything and they can even produce their own food. We consume bacteria every day by eating produced by bacteria through the microbes that live on our food as well as the water we drink. There are a number of ways to make your own food using bacteria. You can use them to ferment vegetables and make alcohol like beer, wine, or vinegar. In addition, you can use a bacterium to create yogurt that is lower in fat and higher in protein than regular yogurt.

Conclusion

Bacteria are not just in your stomach and on your skin. In fact, they can live anywhere on the planet. Here are five interesting facts about bacteria that you might not know.
