Mirzapur: In its pursuit of fostering a paradigm shift in agricultural practices, the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh is spearheading initiatives to enhance the income of farmers. Mirzapur district, known for its extensive engagement in farming, is witnessing a transition from traditional to modern agricultural methods, with a particular focus on horticulture and orchard farming.
“District Magistrate Priyanka Niranjan is set to roll out a distinctive plan in February, aiming to revive the district’s agricultural landscape through the cultivation of date palm trees. The blueprint, devised by the district administration, envisions not only bringing back the lush greenery of Mirzapur but also enriching farmers with substantial profits from date cultivation”.
Traditionally engaged in farming, the district’s agricultural landscape is gradually witnessing a shift, especially among the younger generation of farmers who are adopting modern techniques for increased profitability. Priyanka Niranjan’s initiative is poised to unlock the vast potential of date palm cultivation, contributing to the prosperity of farmers in the region.
In preparation for this groundbreaking project, District Horticulture Officer Mevaram visited Rajasthan to study the intricacies of date cultivation. Mevaram confirmed that Mirzapur’s climate is ideal for date production, and the Barhi variety of date palm is well-suited to the region. Tissue culture plants, crucial for the cultivation process, will be sourced from Rajasthan, with production slated to begin three years after planting.
District Horticulture Officer Mevaram highlighted the economic viability of date palm cultivation, stating that each plant can yield up to two quintals of date fruits. With 60 plants per acre and a lifespan of around 60 years, date palm cultivation promises disease-resistant, long-term profits for farmers. Mevaram estimates an annual profit exceeding Rs 6 lakh per acre, making it a lucrative venture for the farming community.
“District Magistrate Priyanka Niranjan emphasized the government’s commitment to boosting farmers’ income through alternative agriculture. The upcoming date plantation in February will not only involve the distribution of saplings but also include training sessions for interested farmers. The government aims to support farmers with available funds, ensuring the success of this pioneering initiative in Mirzapur district. As the sweet revolution unfolds, it is expected to not only transform the agricultural landscape but also significantly improve the lives and incomes of farmers in the region”.
