In 1999, Dr. Kumar was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Sagar constituency and he has been a Member of Parliament (MP) ever since. He has been re-elected to the Lok Sabha five times from the same constituency.
During his tenure as an MP, Dr. Virendra Kumar has served on several committees such as the Committee on Home Affairs, the Committee on Human Resource Development, and the Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He has also been a member of the Standing Committee on Rural Development and the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water, and Sanitation.
In July 2021, Dr. Virendra Kumar was appointed as the Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment in the Government of India.
