What To Do If You Have A Fever

Whether it’s a fever or not, sometimes you just have a feeling that your body is off and needs help. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to make sure you stay healthy. The first step in staying healthy is identifying the cause of your fever. When you suspect that your fever is caused by something other than an outside virus, it’s time to make a doctor’s appointment.

What Causes a Fever?

Getting a fever can be an uncomfortable experience, but it’s typically not a serious issue. It’s caused by one of three things: infection, inflammation, or the body being too hot. If you have a fever, there are certain things you should do to take care of yourself.

The Symptoms of a Fever

When you have a fever, you feel like something is wrong. Your body temperature may be higher than normal or it may be lower than normal. You might also have other symptoms associated with a fever such as headache, muscle aches, and nausea. Fever usually lasts for 2 to 3 days but it can last anywhere from 1 day to 3 weeks.

Testing For a Fever

Most people know how to check for a fever, but what if you have a fever and need to be tested? Here are some ways to test yourself:

  • Test your own skin temperature. To do this, place your hand on your forehead, between the eyebrows, on the back of your wrist, or near the top of your foot.
  • Test yourself with an oral thermometer. This type of thermometer is placed in the mouth at room temperature and reads the body’s temperature over time.
  • Check with your doctor to see if they have any other methods that would work best for you.

When to Call Your Doctor

If you are experiencing a fever for more than three days, call your doctor. If you’ve been feeling tired or having some aches and pains, or your rash is spreading, see your doctor to diagnose the cause. If your fever has been hanging around for more than a few days, talk to your doctor and make sure you’re not going into sepsis. If you have any of these symptoms, get medical help right away:

  • Severe and continuous vomiting
  • Convulsions that last more than four hours
  • Signs of trouble breathing

Treating a Fever

The first thing to do when your fever rises is to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. This will help you avoid dehydration and prevent any complications. The second step is to get a thermometer, which can be found at most pharmacies or online. It should ideally be an oral one because they are more accurate than the traditional ones that measure body temperature. Lastly, take ibuprofen for pain relief if you have it available as it will also help reduce the fever and reduce inflammation in the brain.

Prevention of a Fever

It is important to keep your body temperature normal in order to avoid a fever. In order to prevent one from setting in, it is important to keep yourself hydrated and well rested. It is also important to stay out of the sun for long periods of time or wear a hat or visor if you are going outside. You should contact your doctor if you have persistent symptoms like a sore throat, runny nose, headache, or muscle pain.
