Kochi: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi marked a historic occasion as he unveiled three pivotal infrastructure projects, collectively valued at over Rs 4,000 crore, in Kochi, Kerala. The inaugurated projects encompass the New Dry Dock (NDD) and International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), along with the LPG Import Terminal established by Indian Oil Corporation Limited at Puthuvypeen.

The significance of these projects cannot be overstated, as they resonate with Prime Minister Modi’s overarching vision to revolutionize India’s ports, shipping, and waterways sector, fostering enhanced capacity and self-sufficiency.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi shared insights into his morning visit to the Bhagwan Guruvyurappan temple, emphasizing the cultural and spiritual connections that bind the nation. Reflecting on his recent inauguration speech at the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport in Ayodhya Dham, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to perform darshan at the Ramaswamy temple in Kerala.

Underlining the pivotal role of each state in India’s development journey, Prime Minister Modi delved into the historical significance of ports in fostering prosperity and envisioned a similar role for ports in contemporary India, now emerging as a global trade hub. He highlighted the government’s commitment to fortifying port cities like Kochi through increased capacity, infrastructure investments, and enhanced connectivity, as part of the Sagarmala Project.

The Prime Minister underscored the transformative impact of the inaugurated projects, particularly the New Dry Dock—the country’s largest—which not only facilitates docking for sizable vessels but also accelerates domestic shipbuilding and repair capabilities, reducing dependence on foreign entities.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi commended Kochi Shipyard’s role in producing ‘Made in India’ assets such as the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and electric vessels for the Kochi Water Metro. He lauded the facility’s efforts in contributing to modern and sustainable water connectivity in Indian cities.

Highlighting the reforms in the ports, shipping, and waterways sector over the past decade, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the resultant surge in investments and job opportunities. He celebrated the substantial increase in the number of Indian seafarers and the boost in passenger and cargo transport through inland waterways.

As India gains global recognition, Prime Minister Modi pointed to agreements made during India’s G20 Presidency, particularly the Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, which promises to fortify the coastal economy and contribute to a ‘Viksit Bharat.’

The event witnessed the presence of dignitaries including the Governor of Kerala Shri Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister of Kerala Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal. As these projects unfold, they are poised to elevate India’s shipbuilding and repair capacities, fortify energy infrastructure, reduce logistics costs, stimulate economic growth, and open doors to domestic and international business opportunities.
