Chidambaram Temple, also known as Thillai Nataraja Temple, is a grand Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the town of Chidambaram in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the five Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, representing the element of Akasha (Space), and is considered one of the most significant temples for Shaivism, one of the major Hindu sects. This temple is also famous for its architectural beauty and unique style.

History of Chidambaram Temple
The Chidambaram Temple is believed to have been built during the reign of the Chola dynasty in the 9th century CE. The temple was later renovated by the Pallava and Vijayanagara dynasties. It is believed that the temple’s origins date back to the mythical ages when Lord Shiva himself performed his cosmic dance, known as Tandava, in this very spot.
The architecture of Chidambaram Temple
The Chidambaram Temple is renowned for its unique architectural style and grandeur. The temple complex covers an area of about 40 acres and comprises several mandapams, shrines, and gopurams (towers). The temple’s main sanctum sanctorum houses the Nataraja idol, which is believed to be the representation of Lord Shiva as the cosmic dancer. The idol is made of a special type of metal alloy called panchaloha.
The temple’s main gopuram is about 130 feet tall and has 13 stories. The tower is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures, depicting various mythological stories and scenes from the life of Lord Shiva. The temple’s ceiling is adorned with beautiful paintings that showcase the temple’s rich history and cultural significance.
Significance of Chidambaram Temple
The Chidambaram Temple is considered one of the most significant temples for Shaivism. It is believed that the temple’s inner sanctum sanctorum, known as the Chit Sabha or the Hall of Consciousness, is the spot where Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance. The temple is also renowned for its Akasha Lingam, which is believed to be the manifestation of Lord Shiva as the element of space.
The temple also plays a crucial role in the annual Natyanjali dance festival, which is celebrated in honor of Lord Nataraja. The festival attracts many renowned dancers and artists from all over the world, who come to offer their prayers and perform dance offerings to Lord Nataraja.
