Banned Oxytocin in Delhi Dairies: High Court Alert

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

A recent submission in the Delhi High Court has shed light on the alarming misuse of oxytocin in dairy colonies across Delhi, raising concerns over animal welfare and public health.

Oxytocin, banned by the Central government in April 2018 due to its misuse in increasing milk yield in cattle, continues to be widely used in dairy farming, as highlighted in the court proceedings. The administration of oxytocin, primarily aimed at inducing milk let-down and boosting milk production, poses significant risks not only to the health of milch cattle but also to humans who consume the milk.

In response to the revelation, the Delhi High Court has called for immediate action against the rampant use of oxytocin in dairy colonies. Describing the practice as “animal cruelty,” the court has directed the Department of Drugs Control, GNCTD, to conduct weekly inspections to ensure compliance with regulations. Cases of spurious oxytocin usage or possession are to be registered under relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, of 1960, and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, of 1940.

Furthermore, the High Court has urged the Intelligence Department of Delhi Police to identify and take action against sources involved in the production, packaging, and distribution of spurious oxytocin. Recognizing the need for urgent intervention, especially in areas near landfill sites where dairies are situated, the court has emphasized the necessity for relocating and rehabilitating such facilities to mitigate health hazards.

The court’s proactive stance underscores the gravity of the situation and the imperative for swift corrective measures. In an effort to address the issue comprehensively, the court has summoned key officials to devise strategies for implementing directives effectively, ensuring the welfare of both animals and humans alike.
